Saginaw Bay Walleye Fishing Report - 2011

Saginaw Bay walleye fishing reports - Au Gres, Pinconning Bar, Linwood, The Black Hole, Callahan Reef and Buoy 1.  The latest fishing information from the Walleye 101 Team, local guides, and bait shops.  The fishing on Saginaw Bay goes through a variety of different "seasons" - check here before you head out.  Remember that the best fishing is not necessarily where you see the biggest pack of boats!   Tight Lines ~ The Walleye 101 Team

November 14-19  HOT Action on the Bay

Captain Lance Valentine 11/20/12
Fishing Report:  Fishing has been HOT on Saginaw the past week or so with good numbers of 4-7lb fish and an occasional trophy caught for good measure.  Best fishing is in 14-17 feet of water, with 16 being the most consistent.  Areas for good action include the NW corner of the cigar, NW corner of the Dumping Grounds and around the power water intake south of Linwood.  Launching out of Linwood Beach Marina puts you close to the action.

Long, thin crankbaits like Smithwick Deep Suspending Rogues, Reef Runners and Deep Husky Jerks have been producing.  Anything with a pink, red or especially orange belly has been hot.  Speed vary from 1.2-1.6 mph, so be sure to vary your speed, or make "S" turns.  Staying on the small pods of fish is crucial, so use your electronics to increase your catch!

August 17, 2011 - Capt Lance on the Bay

Captain Lance Valentine 8/17/2011
Fishing Report: Hey…where is everybody? Seems like the bay is deserted.  Had a charter today and ended up with 6..lot better than I thought!  Found a small pocket of fish between the fingers and Buoy 1 in about 23 fow. picked away for about 3 hours and got the 6 keepers and 6 throwbacks. no "trash" fish today.

4 fish came 55' back on a deep little ripper (metallic watermelon)

1 120' back on a 1/4 tot

1 80' back on a 1/4 tot

A little bumpy most of the day. Started in shallow by the crib and got nothing. moved out to where I have been doing well all summer, saw some fish on the sonar and just stayed on them.

August 15, 2011 - Windy and tough...

Captain Lance Valentine 8/15/2011
Fishing Report:
Strong NW winds late last week have the Bay in a state of turmoil.  Water temps both on the surface and the bottom have been changed and the fishing was slow this past weekend.  Most guys were getting 2-4 fish.  20-23 fow seemed to still be good in the area out near bouy 1 and 2 as well as 12-15 fow in front of Linwood Beach Marina south toward KawKawlin.

The strong weekend winds seemed to break up the schools of fish, so looking before fishing is more critical than ever.  As the winds die, the fish will regroup and fishing will get good again as we start the late summer/early fall transition.

August 11, 2011 - Michigan DNR Report

Walleye were still being taken near Buoys 1 and 2 in 13 feet of water off Pinconning, and some from the weed beds between Maisou and Heisterman Islands. Perch fishing is starting up and they are being taken from 20 feet of water near the Spark Plug, east of the Spark Plug in 30 feet of water, from northeast of the Black Hole, and from certain locations in 12 to 14 feet of water on the west side of the Bar. Catches were averaging 10 to 20 large perch per boat per trip with quite a few 10 to 12 inch fish.

July 30, 2011 - Decent Action

Captain Lance 7/30/2011
Fishing Report: Slow day but managed to get 12 for our charter.  We always talk about not judging your success against the limit, but against other fishermen on the water, and this was a great example.  Fish came one at a time and patience was a huge key.  Most of the other boats I talked with only had 2-5 fish, so our 12  was pretty good.  Stayed in a relatively small area and just kept fishing it.  Little Warrior spoons on 4 colors of lead took 10 of the 12.  Slowed down to about 1.9 and started getting more consistent fishing than we did at higher speeds.  Gold based LV Perch and silver based 101 Baby Blue Minnow were the best colors.

Lots of sayings from my tournament days kept going through my head yesterday:

"Never leave fish to find fish"
"Can't catch fish at 40 mph"
"Sometimes a grind is the best you can find"

Rob W Big Boy 7/30/2011
Fishing Report:  I was also out there working the weeds south of Pinconning Bar.  Managed 2 nice healthy 'eyes. After landing 6 healthy catfish, headed north to 34 FOW caught and released 10" Steelhead. That little guy was breaking water but couldn't quite lift the planer board

July 17, 2011 - Capt Duncan on the Bay

Captain Duncan Wooster 7/17/2011
Fishing Report:  Had a great day Sunday the 17th, a 6'' ripple made the 8 miles run out of the DNR Saginaw river launch very easy and quick, we were on the west side of the channel in 22 fow. The fish were on the bottom in the morning. My best set up was silver and purple Hot n' Tots  40 / 40 with a 2 oz snap weight. Speed 2 to 2.5 MPH

Captain Duncan usually fishes Lake Erie but will head up to the Bay if your interested.

July 16, 2011 - Great trip to the Bay!
Captain Lance had a great day on the water today.  Looks like 2011 is shaping up to be another strong season.

Captain Lance 7/16/2011
Fishing Report: Great day on Saginaw Bay today (July 16). Caught a few fish early on 1/4 oz tots 90-120' back than watched the fish head to the bottom. Time for bouncers and crawlers right? WRONG! Little Warrior spoons behind 4 colors of lead and 100' back on mini discs at 2.0-2.2 mph was the ticket. Silver backed spoons were the best with Purple Dazzle, 101 Baby Blue Minnow, and Heavens Door being the best colors. Fished 10 miles form Linwood southwest of bouy 1. Full report with waypoints on the Members Only section of the Walleye101.com message board.
Just kept working the pod of fish. Ended up with 27 nice fish. Did lots of turnig to change speeds on the lures.
May 20, 2011 - Lets Fish!
June marks the start of Saginaw Bay fishing for the Walleye 101 team.  The fish have left the Detroit River and we are headed north to catch some "eaters" on the Bay.  The fishery is busting wide open with massive numbers of 15-19" fish that will be hungry and aggressive as the water finally starts to warm up.  The boats are loaded up with crank baits, crawler harnesses and spoons are we are ready for a great season!  Be sure to send us a report - good or bad - if you get out on Saginaw Bay.
May 15, 2011 - Two Great DVD's!
Lance Valentine's now has two great DVD's that no Saginaw Bay angler should be without:

"Spoon Fed Walleye" DVD teaches you "How to for Walleye" with details on trolling open water with spoons.  Add a new technique to your arsenal that works great outside the traditional summer spoon period!

May 4, 2011 - Lance Valentine Interview
Ready to catch a bunch of fish on Saginaw Bay in 2011?  Just got off the phone with Lance Valentine to get his perspective on what's in store for Saginaw Bay anglers.  Lance said, "Saginaw Bay is setting up for a year of fast action and limits of perfect size eater fish.  You might not put many trophies in the box but you will stay busy on your trips to the Bay".  The bottom line is the usual locations will produce fish again this year.  emember, the Saginaw River produced fish well into summer last year - give it a try if the wind blows yu off the Bay.  This option could save your trip!  Lance went on to say "...people need to understand that this is a big system and the fish are always on the move.  The best advice is don't put a line in the water until you see fish on your sonar"  Lance's has two DVD's designed to put fish in the boat on Saginaw Bay - Spoon Fed Walleye and Spinner Magic.  Buy now
