Can people new to walleye fishing attend a Trophy Hunt?
Yes. Our Trophy Hunts are designed to help you learn proper walleye strategies, techniques and locations. We have a wide range of anglers participating from novice to tournament pros. If you are going to participate as a "boater" then you will need a minimum level of equipment to be succcessful (see Recommended Equipment Section). You can also participate as a "non boater"Back to top

Are people without a boat allowed to participate?
Yes. We have a limited number of spots available for "non boaters". You will be matched up with a "boater" if they have available seating. You are expected to pay for a fair share of all baoting expenses (gas, bait, etc). Please contact Lance for more information at 810-240-2317Back to top

How did the Trophy Hunts get started?
Lance Valentine organized the first Trophy Hunt nearly 10 years ago. The goal was to help anglers become better walleye fishermen. The basic concept has a group of anglers exchanging walleye fishing information on the water via marine radios during the day and back at the hotel at night. The concept took off and today Trophy Hunts take place on numerous lake throughout Michigan.Back to top

Can we reserve a hotel room for additional days?
Yes. Many anglers come in a early for the Trophy Hunt or extend their stay by a day or two. You will need to book addiitional rooms through Lance Valentine as the hotel is actually closed for teh season except for the Walleye 101 Trophy Hunt participants. Lance's phone 810-240-2317.Back to top

 Who is Lance Valentine?
Great question. Lance is a former professional walleye fisherman turned fishing educator. Lance and his Walleye 101 organization has a tremendous following throughout the midwest. He spends a significant part of each season teaching walleye fishing techniques at seminars and boat shows. Lance also guides on numerous bodies of water and has a custom line of educational DVD's and walleye fishing tackle. Back to top

Do I need a big boat to fish Lake Erie?
That depends. Lake Erie can be extremely dangerous - particularly in the fall. We have many anglers that fish safely every year out of 17-20ft boats. Depending on the year, walleye may be less than one mile from the mouth of the Huron River. They may also be 3-10 miles off shore. We closely monitor weather conditions before heading out but only you can determine if it's safe to fish for your particular boat and experience level.Back to top

Does a Trophy Hunt day get cancelled in bad weather?
Yes. If the Coast Guard issue a small craft advisory the Trophy Hunt is cancelled for the day. Back to top

What happens if we can't go fishing one day due to weather?
Great question, and believe it or not lots of our guests have commented that get more from a day of not fishing than they do from a day on the water. If we are stuck on land, Lance and the Walleye 101 staff will be presenting in-depth seminar all day at the Huron Conservation Club or hotel. These seminars have covered many different topics over the years and make a day of not fishing pass quickly and if you are not careful, you just might learn something to help you catch more fish!Back to top

Can we dock our boats at Holiday Harbor over night?
Yes. Holiday Harbor has overnight boat slips for rent. This charge is in addition to normal Trophy Hunt fees. Parking for your trailered boat on Holiday Harbor property is included in the Trophy Hunt price. Back to top

Is there a place to clean our fish?
Yes. A fishing cleaning station with water, electricity and carcass disposal bags is set up at each trip Thursday-Sunday. Hours and location will be announced at the check in meeting on Thursday night. Please bring your own knives, extension cords and bags for your fillets.Back to top

Is there a place to store our fish during the trip?
Currently we have no way to store the groups fish. Bring along a good cooler for packing and storing your fish during the days of the trip.Back to top

Do I need a partner to participate?
Absolutely not! Single anglers are always welcome. If you are coming alone we can either pair you up with a roommate or, if you prefer, a single room is available for a small extra charge.Back to top

Will I need an Ohio License?
Yes, an Ohio license is required for fishing in Ohio waters. Licenses are available daily, for a 3 day period or annually. There are stores in the area that sell licenses but the easiest way to get an Ohio license is online - just follow the links from the Huron Trophy Hunt page or visit www.dnr.state.oh.us/wildlife/dow/regulations/vendor.aspxBack to top

Can I purchase the tackle I need when I arrive?
Unfortunately the best tackle shop in Huron has had to close its doors recently. It is best to have most of what you need before you arrive. There will be some vendors on hand and Lance does bring some tackle (usually line, rods, nets and other small items). If you need specific help with an item, contact Lance and he can point you to the best place to get what you need.Back to top

What do I do for lunch?
Lunch is NOT included in the trip and if you would like lunch you are responsible for making arrangements. Several of the rooms and suites have a refrigerator if you wish to bring food for lunch. Many restaurants in town offer a sack lunch for anglers that can be ordered and picked up in the morningsBack to top

What should I bring for clothing?
Remember this is November! Plan accordingly when packing clothes, especially for the boat. Be sure to include a warm hat, 2 pair of gloves, long underwear and several layers of outer clothing. Raingear helps keep out the wind, even when not raining. Warm, waterproof boots are always needed.Back to top

What about pictures of my fish to show my friends?
There are two Walleye 101 staff photographers that will be taking pictures during the trip both on and off the water. A Bragging Board is set up in the fish cleaning area so you can hang your catch each day and get a picture. A few weeks after the trip you will receive a frame that will include a group shot and the best picture of you and your catch as well as a DVD with all the pictures taken during the trip. Please have your trip sweatshirt on for all pictures.Back to top

What if I catch the fish of a lifetime?
We will have a large fish ruler and an IGFA certified scale at the fish cleaning area. If you catch a personal best, paperwork will be filled out by a staff member and you will receive a special gift a few weeks after the trip. If you catch a Fish Ohio award winner, we will help you fill out the paperwork and take care of getting your certificate and award pin mailed to your home. There are excellent taxidermist a short drive away if you wish to have a fish mounted.Back to top
