Detroit River walleye fishing report - Trenton Channel, Wyandotte, Steel Mills, Ren Cen, Roostertail, and more.  The latest information from Walleye Kid, local guides, and bait shops.  The fishing on the Detroit River changes every day so check here before you head out to the river.  Remember that the best fishing is not necessarily where you see the biggest pack of boats!     Tight Lines ~ The Walleye 101 Team

July 13, 2011 - Walleye are still in the river...

We had a similar situation about 4 years back with a lot of fish staying in the river.  A great report from Jim.  If it's rough on Erie just head into the river and jig or use your bottom bouncers trolling downstream a little faster than the current.

Jim 7/13/2011

Fishing Report:
fished 5 of last 6 days between celeron and horse island.15-19 fow 2 man limit every time out. jigging chart/brown wyandotte worm or gold/brown wyandotte worm tipped with crawler. also backtrolling with firetiger on bouncers. the area has been loaded with fish. if they aren't biting right away, wait a few. they turn on and off all day.best july in river in a long time
June 5, 2011 - Walleye are biting again...

Scott 6/5/2011
Fishing Report:  on 6-5-2011 caught 6 walleyes in 2hrs near salt mines

May 28, 2011 - Not Many Reports
The reports have been slow to come in with the non stop rain and storms.  The Detroit River was the highest level I've ever seen on Wednesday afternoon.  It's going to take a while for all the water and mud to clear out.

Use Caution:  There was a ton of debris heading down the river.  By debris I mean big logs and trees.  We saw a garage door floating on Lake Eire by the Detroit Light last week!

Good luck out there this weekend and let us know how you do.
May 22, 2011 - S I L V E  R   B A S S!!!   Video
They have arrived in big numbers.  We caught 40 in about a half hour Sunday afternoon.  Get out and take a kid fishing!   Should be good for at least three weeks with the water temp holding in the upper 50's.

The Trenton Channel below the stacks is a great place to try.  You can cast anything shiny along the shore - spoons, spinners, jig and plastic, or crankbait. We use also troll for them which can be a blast.  Here's how:

Tie on a small Shad Rap, Rip Shad, or Wallie Diver.  Toss it out about 30-50 feet and start trolling upstream at about 1.1-1.3 MPH in 8-12 FOW. The fish will basically rip the rod out of your hand when they hit and it's a great fight against the current.  Just troll outside of the boats that are anchored along the shore.  You might even pick up a walleye between silver bass.   Watch a video about fishing silver bass
May 21, 2011 - Big Late Season Fish!

Walleye Kid 5/21/2011
Fishing Report:  We have moved out to Lake Erie for our walleye fishing.  Had a good day out there today.  Read our report

Capt Lance Valentine 5/21/2011
Fishing Report: Lance fished his last day on the Detroit River today for 2011.  He is on his way up to Saginaw Bay.  We should have a really good recap from Lance on the 2011 season by next week.  It won't help you much right now but file it away for next season as patterns repeat themselves each year.

Brian 5/21/2011
Fishing Report: My cousin and I headed out yesterday morning to fish the river. We were in the water by 6am and had 6 fish by 9am. All six fish were caught by Mud Island.Water temp was 53, and all fish were caught with a white jig and black worm. After  9 it seemed that the fished had turned off  so we moved over to the steel plant and my cousin picked up a 7 ¼  lbs monster that measured 29 inches. That was only the second fish he caught all day but it was the biggest walleye he had ever bagged. We fished till 11:30 and never got another sniff. But can't complain...WHAT A GREAT DAY J

The picture is one from Brian's report!

Matt 5/21/2011
Fishing Report:  Fished saturday morning and afternoon. caught 28 walleye and 8 throw backs for a 4 man limit. Caught 5 that were 5lb. A few cuaght in front of pier 500 and the rest North of the Ambassador Bridge. Lots of smallmouth and a few silver bass.

May 20, 2011 - Scattered Action
Today's bite was Hot and Cold depending on where you were.  One thing is for sure - there was a big hatch in 2008.  Lots of fish that are 14 7/8" long even if you stretch them!  Here are a couple reports - one from a new Walleye 101 contributor Eric (the picture is his fish).

Eric 5/20/2011
Fishing Report:  Caught this really nice 24 inch fish just north of Mud Island channel (green buoy).  Grey jig with a black wyandotte worm in 24 FOW was this ticket for bringing this guy to the net.  Caught another fish in the same area that was smaller, but nobody ever said "this walleye tastes really small".

Looks like Eric is going to have a great fish fry this weekend!

Eric picked up a copy of Lance Valentine's Upper Detroit River DVD at the boat ramp.  Hopefully he will get a couple ideas for new locations to try out. Check out our online store and order your own DVD...Lets go

Walleye Kid 5/20/2011
Fishing Report:  My dad and grandpa caught 12 fish between 5:00PM and 8:00PM - problem is 9 of them were short fish that had to go back.  Anyway there is a pretty decent bite between Buoy 22 and Buoy 18 (most of their fish came south of Buoy 22 in 30 FOW).  If you're new to the river Buoy 20 is the red Buoy just north of the Wyandotte boat ramp.  Water temp was 54 degrees.  Glow Clown Thump jig and a brown Thump worm did the trick for them.  Clear on the American side but a little muddy on the Canadian side - still fishable and guys were catching a few between the yellow cans across from Great Lake Steel. White bass are in and we caught some really big females over 2 pounds.

Doug 5/20/2011
Fishing Report:  20th - 4 walleye, canadian side flats, 28-30 fow, white jig

Gene 5/20/2011
Fishing Report:  Fished May 20. Caught 1 walleye north of Mud Island in 25 fow, and 3 at the golf course on chartruese 3/4 oz. with Wyandotte worm (brown) in 28 to 32 fow. Saturday (May 21) caught 1 at golf course, lost 2. Caught about 5 to 7 silver bass for each walleye. Very few boats fishing on Friday at the golf course. Lots of boat traffic going through on Saturday. All walleye were between 16 and 20 inches long.

May 19, 2011 - Only 5 Trailers at the Ramp
Thursday afternoon and only 5 trailers at the Wyandotte boat ramp. Reports are slow to come in and the silver bass have invaded the river.

The two best areas have been the Hospital (deeper channel) and the Water Intake to Buoy 94 (this area is on the south end of Fighting Island).  Let us know if you hook up with some fish and help out the guys that are still fishing.
May 12, 2011 - Fewer Reports
The Walleye 101 crew and many of our Detroit River regulars are in Huron Ohio for the spring Lake Erie Trophy Hunt.  They will be back on the river Monday AM so we should have more reports at that time.  Here is what we have:

Brian 5/12/2011
Fishing Report:
went out this morning..hit the tip of fighting. Picked up 4 and fought a sturgeon for about 40 min...what a fish, got it to the side of the boat long enough to get a picture of this amazing creature and then let her go..white jig and black worm...

Mark 5/12/2011  St Clair River
Fishing Report:  Not Detroit, but St. Clair: Thought I would try something different. Not as much current and same patterns.Find green water, not brown, not blue. 16 to 24 FOW ,across from the dow plant on the us side. 3/4oz chart. and org. jig. As Lance says , short jigs, maintain bottom contact, and a good sharp stinger hook. Caught 15 fish and no crowds.

May 10, 2011 - Recent Reports
Here are a few reports from the Walleye 101 website form (below) that guys submitted.  If you get a chance to get out send us a quick report and help everyone out!

Jimmy 5/10/2011
Fishing Report:  got two in the boat had about 12 hits between 3 guys,430-800pm just south of fighting island about 1.5 miles. 3/4 oz lead head, grn/black tail. depth ranging 25/37ft

Jeremy 5/9/2011
Fishing Report:  May 9th fished from 2pm to 5pm, got 3 eyes ifo the cop shop just south of the RenCen. 26 fow, all males were 21-22"   caught them on pink jigs w/ yellow wyandotte worms 2 were caught on stingers

Andy 5/9/2011
Fishing Report:  Began fishing the Trenton channel at 1130 no fish moved north to Zug Island first fish was a 25" female on a chartreuse jig brown Wyandot worm 30FOW. Not sure what happened after that but missed at least 7 or 8 fish in the same location almost had them to the boat and they would spit the hook one of them felt pretty heavy, I was using a stinger just bad luck I guess.

Walleye 101 Suggestion: Andy is describing a common problem we all face with lost fish.  The area he fished has deep water and very strong current.  You need a quality stinger hook and a hard hook set to get the stinger to take hold.  Keep steady pressure on the fish all the way to the top and have a good, fast net man!

May 8, 2011 - Mothers Day Bite
The walleyes put on a good bite for the moms that were out celebrating on the Detroit River Sunday.  Mid river locations produced some really good fishing - Ecorse Channel, The Slag Piles below Great Lakes Steel, and the Rouge River.  Water cleared up really quickly but temps were still in the 52 degree range. The white bass are starting to trickle in and within a week or so you wont be able to get a jig to the bottom.

Walleye Kid 5/8/2011
Fishing Report:  We pulled some really nice fish from the Rouge River this morning. The best location was directly in front of where the Rouge empties into the Detroit River.  The drift was from the top of the river down to the top of Belanger Park.  Most of our fish came from 44-48 FOW on a Chartreuse Thump jig and a brown Thump worm.  Also picked up a few in 16 FOW in the Ecorse Channel at the top of the Mud Island flat - red buoy #2 down to the top of Mud Island.

Dean C 5/8/2011
Fishing Report: Fished mid-river today and caught fish everywhere we went, fighting island, Portofino's, grassy island, Ecorse Channel and Corp of Engineers. All fish came from about 30-40 fow. Best drifts were along fighting island just north of the water intake and the deep water drift south of BASF. Caught 15 total, kept 10 and upgraded 5 of those. Kept fish were from 18”–25” Various color 1oz jigs and thump worms in brown and June gum. Water temps around 52 deg.  Great day on the water!

May 7, 2011 - Roller Coaster
The walleye bite continues to turn on and off throughout the day and at different times along the river.  By this time of year we should be really consistent.  Looks like to 50 degree water is keeping us from getting that hot, aggressive bite we are all waiting for throughout the river.  Here are some really good reports from today...

Matt 5/7/2011
Fishing Report:  4 of us fished 4 hours midriver, didn't pick any up till we got to pier 500.Then caught 5 in two hours ,2 were 27 " + . 3/4 ounce pink jigs with either brown or june/gum worm.

Team Jackson 5/7/2011
Fishing Report:  MAY 7 PICKED UP OUR LIMIT OF EYES BY 11:45 A.M., FISHED @ THE  JOE USING ORANGE JIGS , BLACK WORMS..... BOOYAAAA

Ben 5/7/2011
Fishing Report:  Fished on 5/7 4 guys had great time got 16 most 3lbs got one 28" lost 10 next to the boat all came just north of mud island south of steel mill

Kevin T 5/5-6/2011  (the picture is Kevin's fish)
Fishing Report: Fished the river this morning and yesterday...picked up 5 missed 4....we caught these on 3/4 oz green chartruse and 1oz clown( that you sent me) using brown wyndotte worms and brown with black flake thump worms with stinger hooks.

Kept the small ones and put the big ones back.  Thanks again for the jigs.....

May 6, 2011 - Where is everyone?
Lake Erie Metro Park boat ramp had 6 trailers in the lot when we pulled in Friday afternoon.  $4.25 gas or the Red Wings game?  The morning once again saw some strong action at the Wyandotte Hospital.  The evening slowed down considerable.  Trenton Channel produced some really nice fish in the afternoon. Most fish are being caught in the deepest water in each section of the river.  They are done spawning and are getting set up to exit the river. Water temp was 50-52 degrees.

Captain Lance Valentine 5/6/2011
Fishing Report: May 6th morning was a FANTASTIC trip!  We fished behind the hospital in the BASF channel, and ended up with a boat limit of 3-5 lb fish!  Lowrance Structure Scan was the key to this trip.  While making a drift we spotted lots of fish about 40' to the left side of the boat.  After qucikly moving the boat over 40' we instantly started catching fish and used the GPS to stay on them all morning.  Brown Goby 1 ounce Thump Jig heads with Pearl/Blue 4" Bio MInnow were the BEST.

Jon 5/6/2011
Fishing Report: my brother and I got 3 male fish and lost a couple. We even got 2 big suckers. Did see 1 gentleman pull in a limit by himself but I am thinking it's on the down swing of things.
May 5, 2011 - Beautiful Fish!
This one deserves it's own report!  Rick sent us this picture of a really nice female he caught in the Trenton Channel by the Grosse Ile bridge.  Most years May 5th would be a little late to catch a fish that is almost 29" long.   The cold, wet spring has kept the Detroit River water temp well below normal and Rick capitalized on the opportunity.  Great fish, congratulations!
May 5, 2011 - Ah...slowed down
The river turned in some poor results today.  The fish that had been on fire at the north end of the river (out into Lake St Clair near the tower) shut down.  The middle of the river was slow and got muddy again last night and into today. Seems like 1-3 fish was a pretty common range - some more, some less.   Smallmouth are heading into the river now with guys hooking into a lot of them near the Ren Cen.

Captain Lance Valentine 5/5/2011
Fishing Report:  May 5th in the morning was the first sunny day we have had all year and the fishing suffered!  After filling the boat on Wednesday, we caught 0 walleye on Thursday morning!  Fished the hot spots from Wednesday and other areas in US  and Canada and struggled.  Did get a nice musky in the Sturgeon Hole

Alan 5/5/2011
Fishing Report:  fished out of the wind north side of mud island fished along side lance and paul d. landed two fish 28fow. also had a lot of fun with a 4 ft. sturgeon it took 20 min. plus to get him tired and to the boat. it was a great test for ugly stick and fireline. thank you bob wood.

Nick 5/5/2011
Fishing Report:  We got a late start, 8:45 marked lots of fish in channel by peach island, only 1 SM caught on one drift. Moved to ren cen, nothing on the sonar, down to Cobo and it was on! Ended at 12:45 with 5 nice eaters. 17 to 23 inch's. Chartreuse jig with sea foam Finesse minnow was the hot one. Tight lines.

Dave 5/5/2011
Fishing Report:  fished just north of ren cen in 26 fow got my limit in 2 hrs all on char thump with green thump worm

May 4, 2011 - Head North...
The upper river produced near limit catches today but the middle and lower river was still muddy.  Fishing reports are coming in tonight so more detail soon.

Captain Lance Valentine 5/4/2011 (Morning Charter)
Fishing Report: Ended up just short of a 5 man limit with lots of 3-5lb fish.  Fished 27-30 fow in shipping channel at mouth of Lake St. Clair.  1 oz Thump! jigs in Glo Clown with black Thump! worms and Fire Tiger Jigs with brown worms were the best.  Great day of fishing!!

Captain Lance Valentine 5/4/2011 (Evening Charter)
Fishing Report: Caught 2 nice fish in 21' on Ballards Reef.  Water was dirty!!  Firetiger jig with Camo worm and Glo Clown Jig with brown worm.  Lots of muddy water in the lower and middle river areas today.

Scott 5/4/2011
Fishing Report:  Picked up two above Fighting Island between 1:00 pm and 2:30pm, in 25-30 FOW, orange jig and brown worm. Water temp is 49 and I could not quite see my prop. Tight lines,
Scott
May 3, 2011 - OK at Best...
Not what you would call a great bit today....

Scott 5/3/2011
Fishing Report:  5/3 Afternoon. Top of fighting island. Struggled to get 3 fish.  Canadian side pretty clear H2O and 49.5 deg F  , thought I would do better.  Fish all hit the jig hard.  White Lund.

April 30, 2011 - Depends Where You Fished...
Mixed results depending on where you were on the river today.  The middle and lower river was muddy and the upper river was cleaning up pretty well.  We talked to several people today at Belanger Park that had anywhere from 0 to 2 fish but others did much better as you will see from todays reports...

Larry B 4/30/2011
Fishing Report:  Had a great time fishing on the river today with my good friends Al VanBrocklin and Ken Massengill. Once again the usual spots were muddy and we ended up at Windmill Pt. We fished the 28-34 fow area there. Best colors were a 1oz Bubble Gum jig with a camo thump worm and a 1oz glow clown jig with a 4 inch electric chicken jerk minnow. We ended the day with 13 fish in the box 4 throw backs and a day filled with lots of memories! Tight Lines, Larry Billings

Matt 4/30/2011
Fishing Report:  4 of us fished from 7:45 to 6:45. At mud island, great lakes steel in 27 fow, and Pier 500. Landed 19.  3/4 oz jigs with Wyandotte Worms

Mark 4/30/2011
Fishing Report:  Started fishing about 330 headed up river tried some popular spots nice small mouth in front of ren cen. Moved down in front of uss steel picked up four all on thump jigs with black worm about 19fow. Caught and released one 9.2 pounder.

Jon 4/29/2011
Fishing Report:  My brother Rich and I caught 2 for the day. fished from 9 am till 5, 1 3.6lb male and a nice 6lbs  spawned female.

April 29, 2011 - Slow and Muddy...
Not much going on today on the river for most.  The mud from Lake St Clair made it's way throughout most of the system yesterday and today.  Water temp is 47 degrees and visibility is 4-12" depending on where you are on the river.  Around Fighting Island the water clarity on Canadian side actually looked better than the American side.

Walleye Kid and Lance Valentine fished for a couple hours this evening and managed just one fish.  Most guys we talked to had something like 0-3 fish depending on how long they had been out.  More seemed to be towards the "0" end of the scale...but there were a few active pockets of fish - even in the mud.  Some guys found them...

Scott 4/29/2011
Fishing Report:  4/29  Morning 7:00am 10:30am. Side of mud island south of the big red bouy 19-21ft H2O. 14 fish in the boat. Water dirty.  Chartruese or orange head jig black worm.  White Lund.

The fishing was really good earlier in the week and could fire up throughout the river at anytime.  Can't catch 'em if you're sitting at home.
April 26, 2011 - River Action going strong...
The Detroit River is a couple weeks behind schedule but the wait looks like it's over.  Lots of fish in the river and with the water cleaning up they are hungry!

Captain Lance Valentine 4/26/2011
Fishing Report:  Great day today!!  Fished with Bill T, his grandsons Mike and Devin, and a fishing buddy Bill met at the Walleye 101 seminars this spring, Mark Verges.  Ended up 12 of 18 today with an average around 4 lbs with Mike (10 yo) getting the big fish, a nice 7 lber!  Caught fish in the deep water (27-30) north of Mud Island Channel, on the flat east of the Mud Island Channel, Bottom of Great Lks Steel (blue shed to the sand piles) and in the Ecorse Channel.  Nice most of the day until wind blew HARD around 11 am.  Best combo was brown goby jig with brown worm and orange jig with June Bug worm.  Dark worms have definitely been the best choice for us and most others we have talked to.  Great day with some new fisherman and new friends!
April 25, 2011 - Another Limit...

Captain Lance Valentine 4/25/2011
Fishing Report:
Monday April 25th was a great day for a charter! Fished with Ahmad, Jim, Jeff and Jimmy from Lansing and got a limit!! 1 oz Thump jigs in bright colors (orange, glo clown) using dark Thump! worms and Jerk Minnows (brown, June Bug and Purple haze). Deep water north of Mud Island and the 20-22' break along the Great Lakes Steel. Lots of rain and wind, but good fishing and some new fishing buddies made the day one to remember!

Team Sharktooth 4/25/2011
Fishing Report:
Fished from 630am till noon picked up 4 at the north end of fighting island. 2 of them in the shallow 10 to 12 fow. Then moved over to mud island channel about the time the rain started. Picked up 7 nice males biggest was about 5lbs. All on black 4in. Minnow 5/8 oz. Jig

Captain Paul Doute 4/25/2011
Fishing Report:
Fished with Scott and Amy today. Rain, light wind and somewhat clean water greeted us as we started our morning trip. We tried a number of spots in Canada and the US.   Best area was the 20 to 22ft contour outside of Great Lakes Steel from the blue guard shack through the slag piles fishing 1oz black or plain jig with a black or brown thump worm. Water clarity varied from 6 to 8inch visibility to 2 inchess of visability at location like Salt Docks, and 2 Rocks. Water temp 44.5 degrees. Congratulations goes out to Amy who once again won the annual couple contest between her and Scott for heaviest total catch of the day. Thank you Scott and Amy for your repeat business and great time on the boat!

April 23, 2011 - Trenton Channel Fish
Got a good report from Trenton Channel area today.  Remember this area produces fish until June so add it to your list.  Don't forget to hit the Horse Island bridge when you head back to the Erie Metro Park boat launch

Andy 4/23/2011
Fishing Report:
Trenton Channel from 8:30 am to 1:00 pm boated 5 very nice fish 4 around 6 lb or better and one about 17"  surprised that the weather was as nice as it was, wind did not start up until afternoon, water is clearing up, water temp was 43 to 44 just south of the power plant.  All fish caught on Chartruse with live minow 10-15FOW and one in 18.

Captain Paul Doute 4/23/2011
Fishing Report:
Tough conditions greeted our evening trip. Wind, wind and more rain pelted us for the entire evening. We managed to boat five walleye in a couple hours of misaerable fishing conditions. Water clarity changed from morning to 2 inches; winds NE 20 to 25mph with heavy cloud cover and rain.  Water temp 42 degrees. All of our fish came on the east side of the Ecorse channel drift in 18 to 21ft of water. Thank you DeGroff group for toughing out the miserable conditions.
April 22, 2011 - Mud Island & Trenton Deliver
Got a good report from the Mud Island area today.  This area should hold lots of fish for the next several weeks.  Don't pass it up as you travel up and down the river.  Save some gas - launch at Wyandotte and fish Mud Island!

Scott 4/22/2011
Fishing Report:  Top of Mud Island.  12 fish in the 24-19 inch range.  3/4 OZ Orange and chartruse best colors.  Most people getting fish.  Poor weather.  River cleaning up a bit.

Captain Paul Doute 4/22/2011
Fishing Report:
What a difference 10 hours can make on the Detroit River. The Nuss Group ended up with 5 man Michigan Limit fishing from Great Lakes Steel blue guard shack to the head of Mudd Island. We fished the 30 to 31ft drift and the fishing was on fire. Nets were flying all over the place for most of the morning! Our group ended catching all male walleye today. We had several throw backs and a bonus Canadian fish to finish out the day Visability was 8 to 10 inches with the water color a chalky white. Winds were from the NNE at 10 to 15mph gusting above 20mph in the late morning making boat control difficult. Heavy cloud cover along with rain, sleet, snow greeted us at various times of the morning. Water temp - 42 degrees. Colors of jigs and plastics varied. I think the fish were on a suicide mission!!! Thank you Nuss Group for a great morning of fun fishin'!

April 21, 2011 - A Few Fish Being Caught...
Captain Lance Valentine picked up a couple fish in the mud this evening. The river is a little cleaner than it was two days ago when the visibility was less than 2 inches.  Water temp was down to 41-44 degrees from about 50 late last week.  If you are going to dredge through the mud make sure you've got a chartreuse or orange jig on the line.  Need something they can see.

Captain Lance Valentine 4/21/2011
Fishing Report:  Puled two fish out of the mud from Great Lakes Steel and the Ecorse Channel.  Both fish were in the 25" range.  Both came on Thump! jigs and worms.

Jon 4/21/2011
Fishing Report:  4 walleye today on the Trenton. 1st walleye of the morning went 8lb 3oz and the last went 9lb 4oz.

Ben 4/21/2011
Fishing Report:  Fished 4/21 from 6am to 7pm only got one in trenton nothing north of wyandotte slow day for all

Captain Paul Doute 4/21/2011
Fishing Report:  What do you get when you mix wind, rain, and heavy run-off on the Detroit River? Dirty, dirty, dirty and slow, slow, slow! Visibility was poor all over the river. NE winds pushing 20 to 25mph and 2 inches of visability. We hit a number of locations north of Mudd Island and not much to show for. We ended up finishing up on the east side of the Ecorse channel from the head of Mudd Island to the south end in 18ft before we managed to pull 2 nice keeper walleye. Both keepers came on black jig and june bug wyandotte worm. Thank you Leo and Bruce for a great evening!

April 20, 2011 - Mud and More Mud
Not much to report the last few days.  Lots of mud coming down from Lake St Clair after the big winds over the weekend and early in the week.

We need a few days of calm weather to clear out the lake and let some clean water head south.  The river is filled with fish and they will be hungry once they can see again.
April 18, 2011 - Fish Are Still Biting
The MWC cancelled due to low water yesterday but the fish are in the river and active if you can get them to go in the muddy conditions.  Looks like a few guys are still putting fish in the boat.

Chris P 4/18/2011
Fishing Report: fished afternoon 4 men took 14 fish. big fish 6 1/2 color didnt matter 18 to 32 feet water coler mud could not beleave we picked up that many fish you could see your jig 10"-12" down all fish came at mud island all male fish river is full of fish get there

Captain Paul Doute 4/18/2011
Fishing Report: Fished yesterday afternoon from 4:30pm to 7:30pm in some very miserable conditions with the Jenkins Group. It was brutally cold with winds out of the NE at about 10 mph. We fished north of Mudd Island poor water clarity was the statements of the day. 2 to 3 inch visability was all we could find. We made a couple of drifts from the blue building at Great Lakes to Mudd in 31ft deep and caught a couple. We moved to 2 Rocks area and found the water slightly cleaner with 5 to 6 inch visability. We made several passes in 20 to 24ft of water and boated another 5 fish ranging from 3 to 7.8lbs. We fished up on the east side of Mudd Island on the east side of the channel in 28ft of water to boat our last walleye. A 1oz black jig with black wyandotte worm and 1oz black jig with Big Bite Baits 4" Jack Minnow were our best produces. A good time was had by all! Thank you Tom, Ed, Bob and Barry for a excellent but cold evening!

April 17, 2011 - MWC Tournament Cancelled
The strong west winds are creating low water levels at the Elizabeth Park boat ramp and Day 2 of the Masters Walleye Circuit has been cancelled.  First place leaders from Day 1 have been declared the winners.  Greg Bliznik and Keith Greear, both from Brownstown, Michigan, finished Day 1 with a five fish tournament limit weighing 43.49 pounds. Congratulations on a great basket of fish!

April 14, 2011 - North Wind
The bite started out strong this morning and was pretty good until late afternoon - then it started shutting down.   The Steel Mills have been a good place to fish the last two days. Best depth has been 14-24 FOW with somewhere around 17 being the most productive.  The last red can on the east side of Mud Island Channel (just above Wyandotte boat launch) was good as well.  Boats that fished the majority of the day seemed to have 4-10 fish for their effort.  Most guys that came out for the evening bite ended up with a couple fish.

Friday looks really tough with ENE winds at 20-30 MPH and then it goes down hill from there with rain moving in Saturday....Canadian side mid-river is still too dirty to fish.  Looks like that area will be crazy once it cleans up.  Masters Walleye Circuit in town for a Saturday-Sunday tournament.

Brian 4/14/2011

Fishing Report:  Made 3 drifts this morning in the Trenton channel below the pack of boats. Boated 2 fish. 1- 6# fish and 1- 7.5# fish. Both fish taken on purple chrome 3/4 once jig with 4" purple fleck worm tiped with a shiner.

Joe P 4/14/2011

Mayor 4/14/2011
Fishing Report:  April 14th 4 man limit 5 hours west side of Grosse Isle.  Green 5/8 head with yellow twister tail and a shiner minnow.

April 13, 2011 - Want A Big Fish?
Better get out to the river now!  Looks like the big fish are starting to fire up.  Here is the latest from the Walleye 101 Team.

Captain Lance Valentine 4/13/2011
Fishing Report:

Morning - picked up 6 fish this morning - 2 of them over 7 pounds.  The most productive combination was a one ounce orange Thump! jigs with Black or June Bug Thump! Worms.  Goby jigs with brown worms put a few fish in the boat as well.

Evening - picked up four fish this evening - 3 of the over 7 pounds and one 11.5 pound monster!  The big female hit a one ounce Glow Clown jig with a 3" Emerald Shiner Big Bite Minnow.

Fishing Report:  "Best day i ever had at Detroit:  Fished Wednesday the 13th at stoney island caught 22 fish and lost 7 others at the boat!Between 7a.m.and 530p.m.Pink 3/4 and white with flash blade were hot jigs with minnows. Also saw a guy who boated a 15lb. monster and had it weighed at the bait shop.

The best area right now is around the Wyandotte.  The south end of Great Lakes Steel (the blue building) delivered most of the fish in 16-17 FOW. Another area worth a try might be the 80" Mill (the white building north of Great Lakes Steel).  See The Detroit River Landmarks

The river is packed with fish right now.  When they turn on for real it's going to get crazy!

April 12, 2011 - Wind, Wind, Wind...
Well it must be spring in Michigan...we have had three days in a row with 20+ MPH wind.  Today's NE wind was really challenging for guys on the river.

Captain Lance Valentine 4/12/2011
Fishing Report:

Morning - windy day today!!!!  1 fish in the morning trip.  5 lb male in 17 fow at Great Lakes Steel south end.  1 oz brown goby jig with brown thump worm.

Evening - 3 fish this evening.  1 7lb female at 2 rocks in 14 fow- 1 oz brown goby with brown thump worm.  2 males 18" one in the fighting island channel, one in front of BASF.  1 on 1 oz brown goby with brown thump worm, one on 1 oz orange with a black worm.  tough day with the wind.  fish are here--can feel them on the jig when lifting off bottom.

Brandon 4/12/2011
Fishing Report: I had a charter with Capt Paul on 4/12/11.  Winds 25+mph from the north, dirty water, cold water, and boat control was a challenge but Capt Paul still managed to put us on some fish.  7 walleye are going to feed the mouths of 4 hungry fisherman!  No records were made in size but given the condition I am sure 7 fish was a record for most boats that day!  Great Website, great fishing, and great people.  Thank you Walleye 101!!

April 11, 2011 - Weekend Summary
First big weekend of the season for many anglers on the river.  Here is what we saw out there:

Saturday - weather change basically shut down the bite.  Lots of frustrated anglers.  We did talk to a few people that had 1-5 fish per boat but that was by far the exception.  Many people reporting "0" at the ramp. Walleye Kid's boat managed to pull in one 8.5 lb fish out of the Horse Island Bridge area (more info on that soon).  Some of the better action took place around Fighting Island.  Water temp was still around 40-41 degrees throughout much of the river.

The MWT tournament saw a total of about 100 fish caught with a lot of Goose Eggs on the board - pretty unusual given the talent of many MWT anglers.  It took something like 15 lbs (for 5 fish) to make it into the top 10 (waiting to see the official results posted)

Sunday - a flurry of early morning action in the Trenton Channel put a few fish in some of the boats.  About 75 boats fishing the channel when we got there at noon. The middle and northern portions of the river had very few boats out - the fog probably kept a lot of people home.  Water temp picked up a notch - we saw 43 degrees by Sunday afternoon south of the Trenton Channel.  Most people that had fish Saturday and Sunday caught them on minnows. That is a little unusual and plastics like Big Bite Minnows and Thump! Worms should start producing in the near future.  When you're fishing with plastics there is no wondering whether you have bait on the hook.

Mike M 4/10/2011
Fishing Report:  sunday 2 fish ,one at the rocks on worm, one at mud island on a minnow . thick fog .very few nets seen.
April 9, 2011 - Michigan Walleye Tour Event
First big tournament of the year on the Detroit River.  This event features some of the best local walleye anglers around.  They can fish the Canadian side so if the rain didn't muddy things up too bad that's where lots of guys will be.  Our prediction is the big fish come from Trenton Channel,  Salt Docks (Canadian side), Humbug Marine, and Two Rocks. Depending on which team wins you might hear some details about locations after the final weigh in Sunday.

April 8, 2011 - First Big Fish!

This is the first big fish we have seen from the 2011 season...Congratulations Dave W!

Dave reported this fish in yesterdays update - a Trenton Channel beauty.

Jeremy 4/7/2011

Fishing Report:  also fished the stacks from 7am to 1pm. saw an average of 2-3 fish taken per boat. only landed 1 myself. most of the anglers that were catching em were using live minnows. all 7-10 fow. water temp was 41 degree average.

Alan 4/8/2011
Fishing Report:  fished april 8th mud island and points north. my son and I both had two hits that's it. only saw three fish landed all day. very slow.

Here is the deal with the Trenton Channel...
lots of guys complain about the area - too many snags, too many boats, too many idiots.  Well guess what? They are all right but there is no place on the American side that produces as many Trophy fish year in and year out.  Big fish get caught at Two Rocks, Ecorse Channel, and the Rouge but not in numbers like the Trenton Channel.  Give it a try but have some patience and a lot of jigs in the boat.

Looks like temps are going to head into the 70's on Sunday.  We should see a steady pick up in both number of fish and size over the next few days. Remember...if you're fishing in a big pack of boats and the fish shut down, head upstream or down stream out of the traffic pattern and work the fish that moved away from the pressure.  Stay at the same depth of water where you originally found the fish.

April 7, 2011 - Lower River Kicks It Off...
Thanks to the following guys for letting everyone know the Detroit River walleye season is underway!  They braved some really tough conditions and put some really nice fish in the boat.  The rain and a pretty decent warm up over the next few days should put the season into high gear.

Brian 4/6/2011
Fishing Report:  Fished the stacks today, brought in three fish 22- 26 in. Several nets swinging in the morning, then tapered off around noon. We had one female and two males, seen other two man boats with 5-6 fish. Most fish were caught in 6-10 ft range.

Dave 4/6/11
Fishing Report:  Went out of Eerie Metropark today and braved the rain until 3:00 at the smoke stacks.  Four of us in the boat and we caught 6 - including a 10 pounder and an 8 pounder.  Saw a boat of two anglers limit out.  Several fish being caught. It is officially on!

Mike 4/6/11
Fishing Report:  caught my first limit this year fishing near mud island using 1 oz. blk. jig with blk. fin-s 4in. trailer 4 of the 5 caught on stinger hook smallest was 17 inch largest was 23 inch it took all day hooked 8 landed 5 its on the verge of getting real good

April 6, 2011 - See The Weigh In This Weekend
Here are a couple Detroit River walleye tournaments that are going on.  Stop by and see the weigh in.  You might not get too many details on "where" but at least you can see "what" took place

April 9 - Downriver Walleye Federation (DWF) - JB's Wharf Wyandotte at 3:00 (next to Wyandotte ramp)
April 9-10 - Michigan Walleye Tour (MWT) - Erie Metro Park ramp (probably start around 3:00)
April 5, 2011 - Wyandotte Area Update...
The guys at the Wyandotte boat ramp said they have not seen a single big fish come in to the dock yet.  That's not to say they are not being caught.... but most guys want to show off a big walleye early in the season.  A few fish are being caught in the 15-18" range.  Those fish are probably from the 2007 year class which was the last good hatch.  The massive hatch of 2003 year class fish should be 23-28" by now and will be the vast majority of big fish you catch this season.

Water color looked pretty good - a little stained but that is much better than crystal clear.  Last year the American side was really clear much of the season and the fish moved over into the off color water on the Canadian side.
April 4, 2011 - Waiting For Fish...
We are still waiting to hear from someone that the fish have started biting on the Detroit River.  Looks like Lake Erie is starting to turn on.  Several reports from both the Turtle Island area (southern end of Michigan waters) and the Ohio reefs indicate fishing has kicked off.  Hopefully this storm and wind don't stir up too much mud in those areas or on Lake St Clair.

April 3, 2011 - Recent Reports...
Thanks to the following anglers for sending us their reports!  Would like to hear from you even if you have a slow day on the river - helps everyone out.  Did you know that only 1-2% of all fish that enter the Detroit River ever get caught?  Plenty of fish for everyone.  Walleye 101 is all about sharing information and helping each other become better anglers.

Andrew 4/2/2011
Fishing Report:  On the water at 11 a.m. fished until 5 p.m. Stayed in the Trenton Channel for for a few hours in the morning using 3/4oz jigs and minows, no fish no hits.  Water was clear, about 10 foot or so, H2O temps were 36 to 38 degrees just below the surface. Moved up stream to the BASF Wall water temps dropped a degree still no sucess.  Did not see any ice or any coming down stream.  others on the river had similar reports regarding the lack of a bite.

Tracy 4/1/11
Fishing Report:  Fished Friday the for six hours from bellanger to pier 500 and did not catch a walleye but did get a stealhead at steel mill, no other hits

Tooch 3/31/11
Fishing Report:  Got out Thursday.  A few boats out infront of the wild life refuge.  Didn't catch a thing BUT the water temp was 42.  Shouldn't be long now

Don't be discouraged. This is pretty typical right now on the river.  The first week after the ice comes through can be very slow - not many fish in the system and they are pretty inactive.  Soon you will start hearing reports of really big fish like 10-13lbs - the first females to start biting.  Next guys will start catching numbers of fish as the males move into the river - usually when the water temp moves into the low to mid 40 degree range.

Based on the slow start to spring that could all could happen very close together - especially if we get some warm rain that heats up the water temp quickly.  Remeber, the lower river usually turns on first with the warm water from the power plant and the fact that the fish are coming off Lake Erie.  Try the Trenton Channel, Horse Island Bridge, and Humbug Marine for startes.  Already hearing of a number of fish being caught in the Huron River just south of the Detroit River - it wont be long!

April 1, 2011 - 2011 Walleye Regulations
Here are the 2011 walleye regulations for the Detroit River, Lake Erie, and Lake St Clair.  This is a great resource to have in your boat.  We laminated a copy and kept it in the glove box last season.  The biggest change is the Lake Erie walleye limit in Michigan goes to 6 fish on May 1, 2011 and will be the same as Ohio and Ontario.  Get a PDF Version
March 31, 2011 - Some Progress
This picture is from Elizabeth Park Thursday evening.  Here are the most recent conditions from the lower Detroit River:

Ice Flows: the LOWER Detroit River has scattered icebergs coming down but was relatively ice free this evening.  That could change very quickly - the ice is moving down the Canadian side right now. We don't have any reports from the upper river today

Boat Ramps:
Lake Erie Metro Park has 5 docks in.
Elizabeth Park is OPEN now but has some ice in ramp lanes.
Wyandotte was chained up again.
Belanger Park is open but no dock in the water.

Water Clarity: looks decent right now on the US side.

Remember....it's really early and the conditions can deteriorate very rapidly.  Water temps in the 38 degree range around the Trenton Channel.  Nobody out there to help you so it's best not to take any chances. Be safe, it's going to be a long season.

March 30, 2011 - Tournament Schedule
April 2 - Downriver Walleye Federation (DWF) Cancelled Due To Ice
April 9 - Downriver Walleye Federation (DWF)
April 9-10 - Michigan Walleye Tour (MWT)
April 16-17 Masters Walleye Circuit (MWC)

March 29, 2011 - Huron Ice Box
Wow! Look at the massive iceberg on Lake Huron.  Look at it compared to the size of Lake St Clair to get an idea on how big it really is.....Keep your fingers crossed that this thing stays at Port Huron and doesn't start moving south or it might be May before the Detroit River is ice free.  Gonna keep people off the St Clair River for a while.

This is a really cool satellite image with the clear sky.  You can really see the mud starting to clean up on St Clair and Lake Erie plus and the snow line from the last storm.

See full satellite image
March 28, 2011 - Mid River Ice
The ice is still flowing strong through the middle sections of the Detroit River.  This is a view from Belanger Park looking toward the Canadian side.   It looks like the ice flows are significantly less in the lower part of the river around Mud Island.  That's pretty common since a lot of the ice flows east of Fighting Island and stays on the Canadian side - that can change really quickly with a strong east wind.
March 27, 2011 - Couple Reports...

Jeremy 3/27/11
Fishing Report:  went out today, launched at erie metropark and fished the edison stacks down to the humbug...water was very murky and still way to cold...but i stopped the itch of wanting to get the boat out for the 1st time this year....got no walleye and only saw 3 other boats...still early my friends

Matt 3/26/11
Fishing Report:  Fished trenton Channel No bites, no fish. Water temp. 38 deg

How can these guys be fishing with all the ice coming down? Both Jeremy and Matt were in the lower river near the Trenton Channel.  Many times the ice stays on the Canadian side of Grosse Ille once it reaches the lower river.   That keeps the Trenton Channel ice free.  Be really carful because this can change quickly with an east wind.
March 26, 2011 - More Ice is on the Way...
This satellite image clearly shows a lot more ice and mud on St Clair that needs to work down the river.  With temps in the teens tonight and tomorrow it doesn't look like this is going to melt.  By the way there is still a ton of ice on Lake Huron.  Use this time to get your Canadian license.

View this satellite image full size  (you will need to scroll down from Lake Huron)

March 23, 2011 - Really Cool Video
Check out how the Detroit River ice conditions changed from March 20th to March 22nd.  The river was ice free on the 20th then all the ice in Lake St. Clair broke lose and headed south.  There were a couple guys at the Belanger Park ramp with their boat on the 22nd that looked a little confused.

March 22, 2011 - Yikes!
The Northeast wind did it's job and pushed the ice out of Lake St Clair and into the Detroit River.  What an unbelievable change between Sunday when the river was ice free and Wednesday when it looked like you could walk across it. This picture is looking toward Mud Island from the Wyandotte boat ramp Wednesday afternoon.

For those of you new to spring fishing on the river you can see how quickly the conditions can change. Based on past history it will probably take four or five days for the ice to clear out agin provided it doesn't get jammed up at one of the bridges or turns. The last question is whether all the ice on Lake Huron makes it through the system and into the Detroit River.  Stay tuned for more updates over the weekend.
March 20, 2011 - Ice Free!
Here is what the Detroit River looked like on Sunday afternoon before the ice broke loose on Lake St Clair with the big wind and rain.

This picture is looking toward Mud Island from the Wyandotte boat ramp Sunday afternoon.

March 20, 2011 - Detroit River Update!
We spent part of the day checking on Detroit River conditions.  Here is what we found:

Ice Flows - the river is basically ice free for now.  Looks like St Clair still has ice on the eastern half that could drop into the river at any time.  Hopefully this rain and a west wind finish it off before it moves down stream.  IT'S STILL TOO EARLY.  If the ice moves into the river it will become extremely dangerous - boats can get crushed or you can get trapped and not be able to get back to the boat ramp.

Boat Ramps - Lake Erie Metro Park has 5 docks in and a few boats were out on the river today.  Elizabeth Park is closed until early April.  Wyandotte has one lane open.  Belanger Park is open but no dock in the water.

Water Clarity - looks good right now on the US side.  Today's rain will probably result in a big runoff on the Canadian side of St Clair that will push tons of mud down the river.

Remember....it's really early and the conditions can deteriorate very rapidly.  With water temps in the 35 degree range and nobody out there to help you it's best not to take any chances. Be safe, it's going to be a long season.

March 17, 2011 - Lake Huron Ice!
Looks like there is massive amount of ice piled up in the southern end of Lake Huron. Last year this ice flowed down the St Clair River and trapped some freighters for several days.  It can make it all the way to Lake St Clair and eventually the Detroit River. Lets hope the rain shows up and melts this stuff up north.

The left side of the picture is Saginaw Bay covered in ice as well.

January 29, 2011 - New Fishing Pier & Wildlife Center
There is a really cool project underway to build a wildlife refuge and fishing pier along the Trenton Channel.  It's going to be located just below the Trenton Power plant (Candy Canes).  It will give shore fishermen direct access the both walleye fishing and white bass fishing.  The pier location is right where thousands of white bass spawn in May.  The Downriver Walleye Federation (DWF) has a page dedicated to keeping everyone up to date on the projects.

Looks like 2011 will be another great one on the river.  Just got off the phone with Lance Valentine to get his perspective on what's in store for river anglers.  Lance said, "I expect this to be the best season in the last 10 years.  The massive 2003 year class of fish will be in the 5-8lb range and should provide a majority of the action during April and May".  He also encouraged anglers to get a Canadian license this year.  It's expensive but the vast majority of big fish - and some days most of the fish - were caught on the Canadian side in 2010.  The water on that side of the river tends to be a little off color or stained.  Many days the fish prefer to be out of the super clear water of the American side.  Watch for Lance's fishing reports in the near future.  Book a Guided Trip with Lance.

A Real Success Story!
Here is a great reason why you should get a copy of the "Walleye 101 Guide to the Upper Detroit River" DVD.  What a great story and a cool picture!  Congratulations Dave and Mark!

"Thanks Lance, your upper Detroit river hot spots DVD is responsible for one of the greatest fishing experences I have ever had. As we boated fish, B-Ball fans cheered and took our pics."

God bless you, thanks Dave & Mark!

February 24 1838 - Battle of Fighting Island

On February 24, 1838, a group of Patriots began assembling on Fighting Island on the Canadian side of the Detroit River. Supplies were ferried over from Detroit and some 400 Patriots from Cleveland joined the Detroit area men. It was reported that the Patriots had only 50 muskets and one dismounted cannon among them on the island. General Brady ordered a line of red flags to be placed in the ice on the river marking the border. He deployed his men with orders to shoot any British soldiers passing the line.  The British regulars, artillery and Canadian militia attacked at daybreak. The British force proceeded across the ice to capture the island but did not cross the border.

That's why you need a Canadian license to fish Fighting Island!  Learn how to buy yours
