The Detroit River is one of the greatest places on the planet to catch fish in the 4-6 lb range right now. Get out early in the season and you just might catch a real trophy over 10 lbs.
Spring Fishing
Detroit River spring fishing begins in late March and can run through mid June. The entire river holds fish but the most popular areas are the Trenton Channel, Mud Island, Steel Mills, Rouge River, Ren Cen, and the Rooster Tail. The primary technique on the river is jigging 3/4 ounce jigs with live minnows or plastic baits. If you're after a trophy walleye make sure you hit the water in early April.
Handlining
This unique technique was developed on the Detroit River many years ago. Handliners troll upstream with small crankbaits that are attached to wire line and a one pound weight. It's a unique experience that can be very productive when fish are in a neutral mood, if the water is dirty from spring runoff, or at night. Check the listings below for a handlining guide.

Captain Lance Valentine - Walleye 101 Charters
Lance Valentine will provide a hands on, high intensity, on the water learning opportunity - not a "traditional charter". These trips are great for the novice who wants to get started the right way or for seasoned anglers who want an in-depth learning experience. Lance will then share his vast knowledge of the Detroit River using sonar and GPS to locate good fishing spots, bait and gamefish. You will be coached through the proper way to use all the equipment and how to fish the chosen presentation properly - with all the little secrets the pros know!
Lance is on the Detroit River from early April to mid May. His specialty is jigging and his boat is located in Wyandotte.

Captain Paul Doute - Angler's Quest Charters
