What's Gonna Get Hot First in 2012?
Detroit River - Fishing on the Detroit River typically kicks off the last week of March, provided the ice flows out of Lake St. Clair have ended. Early action means big fish - really big fish - but not numbers. The females are the first to arrive and the males will follow as the water warms into the low to mid 40 degree range. Key areas for hooking up with a big female include Trenton Channel, Two Rocks, and the Salt Docks (Canadian side). You will probably be dealing with dirty water which means big, high profile Thump Jigs and plastics (might tip it with a minnow). Captain Lance Valentine and Captain Paul Doute will both start their charter trips in early April.
Lake Erie Michigan Waters - the Detroit River gets all the headlines but there are plenty of fish caught on Lake Erie early in the season. The shallow waters from Luna Pier to Turtle Island are your best bet. Brest Bay is a good second choice. The biggest factors for Michigan waters are wind and mud and how early in the season the place cleans up. If the water clears up early (late March) you will catch some big females, if it takes a while to clean up (late April) then it's mostly males and lots of them. Best programs are hair jigs and minnows, blade baits and maybe even trolling big Reef Runners. Captain Duncan Wooster can get you out on Lake Erie early in the season.
Lake Erie Ohio Waters - the vast majority of all fish in Lake Erie spawn in the Maumee River and the Reefs west of the Erie Islands. It's a pretty big area that sees massive numbers of boats and produces tons of fish - both big females and numbers. The majority of anglers jig the reefes with hair jigs and minnows. Drifting is the technique of choice - bring at least a couple drift socks. A few guys do troll with big crankbaits like Reef Runners and Rapala Husky Jerks. Same program here in terms of timing - big females in late March and early April. They get off the Reefs really quickly and it becomes an all male thing. Captain Duncan Wooster can get you on the fish from a number of Ohio ports in teh spring.
